Over the past decade, colleges and systems nationwide have scaled corequisite courses to replace traditional developmental education, with mixed approaches and varied results. Many questions still remain about corequisite implementation: How have different stakeholders experienced the change to corequisite courses? What supports have proven critical for adoption and scaling? What are the key lessons for states and colleges considering their next steps for reform?
In a December 3, 2025 webinar, CCRC researchers Julia Raufman and Hollie Daniels Sarica shared findings from three projects on developmental education reform in Arkansas, Louisiana, and the City University of New York (CUNY) system. Representatives from each system—Emily Cosper, dean of liberal arts, social science, and education at Delgado Community College in Louisiana; Ricky Tompkins, vice president, technical education and workforce development at North Arkansas College, and Sarah Truelsch, assistant dean for policy research at the City University of New York (CUNY)—also shared their perspectives on scaling corequisite implementation in their colleges.
Webinar attendees had several questions for the panelists, including about longer-term outcomes for corequisite students; online corequisites; serving students with greater needs, including those who have been out of colleges for several years; and the financial implications of corequisite reform. These questions highlight the need for additional inquiry into corequisite implementation. CCRC researchers hope to continue to explore corequisite design, implementation, and outcomes to provide more fine-grained answers to the questions lingering in the field.
The findings from the following reports were the focus of the webinar:
