This study addresses the following questions: (i) Has dual enrollment increased overall postsecondary enrollment at higher education institutions and within communities? (ii) Which sectors have benefited the most: community colleges, public or private four-year institutions, or all?
Using publicly available data from IPEDS (2000–2023), the presenters went beyond the well-documented positive effects of Dual Enrollment (DE) on student success to explore broader aggregate benefits for institutions and communities investing in DE, specifically by assessing changes in postsecondary participation.
Descriptive evidence on the growth of dual enrollment and the political support behind it was presented, along with a shift-share-like instrument that was proposed to isolate the causal effects of these findings.
