Melissa Herman will head this poster session and present emerging qualitative findings on the implementation of a statewide dual admissions policy in California which guarantees transfer admissions to a University of California campus to high-achieving community college students. She will share preliminary findings from her dissertation on the early successes and challenges of the policy’s implementation.

Forecasting Long-Run Effects of College Interventions Using Short-Term Impacts

Though many interventions have been made to increase credential completion, research shows their impacts are mixed. The ability to detect early on whether an intervention may forecast long-run student success may prove invaluable to policymakers and intervention developers deciding whether to adapt interventions as they happen. This session will present a current study that uses a meta-analytic dataset comprised of 31 college randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to explore how short-term indicators of intervention success forecast long-run impacts.

Two Decades of State Pre-K Investments: Trends in Spending and Access Across the U.S.

Over the past 20 years, forty-four states have increased pre-k enrollment, with several of the remaining states beginning to introduce pre-k expansion policies. Yet, there is an ongoing debate around the role state-run pre-k can play in serving children. This session will present a descriptive study addressing the following research questions: 1) How have spending patterns in state-funded preschool changed over time and across states? 2) Can evidence of a tradeoff between expansion to more students and the level of investment in a given pre-k slot (i.e., quality) be observed across states?
