Gatekeeper Course Success in Virginia

May 2009–July 2013

Based on data collected at seven colleges, this qualitative study explored factors affecting students’ patterns of progression from developmental education through introductory college-level or “gatekeeper” math and English courses. A previous CCRC quantitative study found substantial variation among Virginia community colleges in the rates at which students enrolled in and passed developmental and gatekeeper courses.
