In their workforce development programs, community colleges have often used the learning standards of external constituencies, and almost all schools offer continuing education and customized training programs that certify students in the competencies of business and industry. In the field of information technology (IT), rapid technological and market changes have given rise to the need for sub-degree certifications that can be completed quickly.
As part of CCRC’s National Field Study of Community Colleges, this study examined the development of new programs and their place within the evolving community college mission of workforce development. Based on evidence from 15 community colleges, the study identified the significant implications of these developments for the future role of community colleges.
