Refining and Evaluating Bronx Community College's First Year Seminar (BCC-FYS)

May 2013–June 2014

As part of a college-wide First Year Initiative, Bronx Community College (BCC) of the City University of New York (CUNY) offers a First Year Seminar (FYS) designed to impact the engagement and success of all first-year students at the college. FYS combines orientation to college activities with an introduction to academic content using integrative learning strategies intended to help students develop the disposition, academic habits, and general education skills necessary to succeed in college classes.

The primary goals of this project were to:

  1. provide BCC with real-time, objective feedback on the implementation of BCC’s First Year Seminar during the 2013–2014 school year;
  2. examine the implementation process and implementation challenges of a revised student success course; and
  3. understand how a revised student success course, with a focus on applied content, may contribute to sustained, improved student outcomes.

Funding was provided by the City University of New York's Office of Academic Affairs.
