Building on Success: Iterating Within and Beyond Corequisite Models

Strong Start to Finish Symposium 2026
July 8, 2026

Washington, D. C.

As effective as the corequisite model is, it does not ensure that all students will see success in their first year of college. In many states, more than 60% of students do not successfully complete gateway courses within a year of enrollment. Corequisite models work—but how can we make them work better? What improvements or innovations could move the needle even further?

This session shared resources and findings from two initiatives aimed at identifying next-generation strategies that enhance, supplement, or extend corequisite models. Researchers from the Community College Research Center and Phase Two Advisory and a faculty member from CCRC’s community of practice presented strategies to identify why current corequisite models may not work for all students; an inquiry tool for developing innovative approaches; and examples of refinements and innovations being implemented across the country. The session included activities that encourage participants to discuss challenges in their own contexts and brainstorm new ways to foster faculty and staff collaboration in support of developing improvements and innovations.

Session participants left with strategies for ideating improvement on their own campus, as well as ideas of new approaches they may want to implement.
