Mixed-Methods Research Through the Lens of a Funding Agency

By Thomas Brock

Comprised of senior scholars across the nation, the Mixed Methods Working Group (MMWG) was convened to address the topic of mixed-methods research in education. In this piece accompanying a report by the MMWG appearing in Teachers College Record, Thomas Brock describes how mixed methods may be used in education research and offers advice to researchers who are seeking funding from the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) for mixed methods studies. He provides examples of IES-funded projects and initiatives and discuses important points to consider when writing grant proposals. From 2013 to 2018, Brock was the commissioner of the National Center for Education Research (NCER) at IES, and in 2017, he was delegated the duties of director of IES. He is now director of CCRC.
