The medal is awarded to people who have played a fundamental role in supporting the college.

Guttman, part of the City University of New York, is a new college designed around many of the principles of guided pathways . It opened in 2012 and established the President's Medal at its first commencement in 2014.

CCRC has had strong ties to Guttman since its beginnings. In 2013, Bailey delivered the keynote address at the naming ceremony for the college, describing it as perhaps the most ambitious effort in the nation to move beyond marginal change and fundamentally rethink the design and operation of community colleges.
