Dolores Perin, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor of Psychology and Education in the Health and Behavior Studies Department at Teachers College, Columbia University. She coordinates the Applied Educational Psychology: Reading Specialist M.A. Program, which prepares students for state certification as reading teachers. She teaches courses in literacy assessment and instruction, adult literacy, and cognitive processes in writing. In addition, Dr. Perin is a Senior Research Associate at the Community College Research Center at Teachers College, where she specializes in pedagogy, curriculum and professional development in community colleges. She has conducted research into academic-occupational integration in community colleges, and literacy skills of community college developmental education students. She has authored several papers on these topics, as well as a faculty development guide for integrated instruction in community colleges. She is currently researching academic preparedness and remedial education in community colleges, including instructional practices, testing and placement policy, and student outcomes. Prior to joining the faculty at Teachers College, Dr. Perin was Principal Investigator, Project Director and adjunct faculty member at the City University of New York Graduate School, where she directed federally and state funded research and demonstration projects in areas including school-to-work transition of moderately handicapped adults, workplace literacy and adult learning disabilities, as well as teaching in the Educational Psychology doctoral program. She has published in journals including Higher Education, Urban Education, the Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy, Community College Journal, Reading Psychology and the Journal of Educational Psychology. Dr. Perin is a licensed psychologist who has expertise in working with children, adolescents and adults with learning disabilities.
