Next Step: Preparation (Advocates Say Improving Student Services is Critical)
The National Community College Symposium, which was held in Washington, D.C. and sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Vocational and Adult Education (OVAE), has made front page news in the July 4, 2008 issue of Community College Times.
According to reporter Matthew Dembicki, Leaders from community colleges, higher education organizations, federal agencies, foundations, industry and education officials from Europe, Africa and the Middle East discussed how to better prepare students for college. Proposals included developing more partnerships with high schools and even K-12 systems and providing better student support services for college students. (Community College Times, Vol.XX No.14, p.1) CCRC Director Thomas Bailey, Senior Research Associate Melinda Mechur Karp, and Senior Research Associate Dolores Perin were among the presenters at the symposium. --The full-length Community College Times article is available at http://www.communitycollegetimes.com/article.cfm?ArticleId=1060 (subscription may be required to access). -- Arrangements for the web cast of the full symposium proceedings were managed by Synergy Enterprises, Inc.
