Lumina's Dream Machine 'Achieving the Dream' Strives for Lasting Community College Improvement

By: Paul Bradley — Community College Week (August 27, 2007). vol. 20, pp. 6-9.

The August 27, 2007 issue of Community College Week features a special report on how the Lumina Foundation for Education initiative Achieving the Dream: Community Colleges Count "strives for lasting community college improvement." The article provides an overview of CCRC's data analysis from the first 27 colleges that received grants. Reporter Paul Bradley writes:

According to Bailey’s study, eight of 10 incoming students were referred to at least one developmental course. The data showed that only 35 percent of the students completed a college level “gatekeeper” English or math course within four years…Bailey says the data underscores his contention that helping underprepared students remains the chief challenge facing community colleges.
