Transition Patterns Can Reveal Student Success Levels

It is difficult to track students between secondary and postsecondary education. It requires high schools and colleges to share information, and also to agree on the definitions of program outcomes. Community colleges have not made it a priority to support institutional research into studying student outcomes, and they have not used research as a method for identifying and diagnosing the institutional barriers that contribute to students leaving college prematurely. This article emphasizes that, despite various difficulties, such research is necessary.
