AVAILABLE POSITIONS: (2), posted on August 7, 2008 SENIOR QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH ASSOCIATE (F/T) Position Summary: The Community College Research Center (CCRC) at Teachers College, Columbia University is seeking a senior researcher to lead and conduct quantitative studies as part of the Centers growing portfolio of foundation- and government-funded research projects. The projects will include research using large longitudinal data sets and analysis associated with program evaluation. The research will primarily have to do with the analysis of the determinants of postsecondary student outcomes and the evaluation of programs and initiatives designed to improve those outcomes. The researcher will also be responsible for working with CCRCs leadership team to plan and secure funding for new studies on issues of importance to higher education policy and practice. Responsibilities: Lead grant- and contract-funded research projects. Team with CCRC researchers to conduct these studies using primarily quantitative research methods. Oversee the design of quantitative methods using existing administrative data and the design of projects involving primary data collection. Oversee the work of research assistants and contract researchers. Write up research findings and conclusions for publication as papers in academic journals and as articles and reports for community college practitioners and policymakers. Prepare and deliver presentations on research findings for academic and practitioner audiences. Respond to media requests concerning community college research Work with the associate director to ensure compliance with grant and contract agreements, including timely submission of required progress reports. Work with CCRC leadership team to coordinate the Centers existing research projects and plan the development of new studies and research strands. Write proposals to secure funding for new research projects. Qualifications: The applicant must have a Ph.D. in economics, sociology, statistics, or other relevant discipline, training and experience with quantitative research methods, and experience managing and conducting research in higher education, preferably with an emphasis on community colleges. Considerable experience in qualitative analysis is required. Strong written and oral communication skills are essential. Candidates will also be expected to have demonstrated an ability to manage multiple grant- and contract-funded projects, supervise the work of other professionals, interact with external organizations and funders, and work effectively as part of a team. Travel is required.
ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT (P/T) Description: The Community College Research Center (CCRC), an interdisciplinary research organization focused on the study of community colleges, is seeking a part-time administrative assistant (21 hours per week) to support all Center activities. Start Date: The position will begin immediately. Hours: 17.5 -21 hours per week. Salary: $15 per hour. Application Deadline: Open until filled. Responsibilities: Format proposals, reports, meeting materials, and presentations Assist with the planning and organization of seminars, conferences, board meetings, etc. Arrange travel for staff and review and process staff requests for reimbursement Manage mailing lists/enter and maintain data on online databases Proofread, copy-edit, and format reports, proposals, and meeting and conference materials Draft correspondence and prepare presentations for senior staff Take minutes/notes at meetings and prepare for distribution to staff Respond to requests for information Assist research staff with project-related tasks General office administrative/reception duties shared among other assistants including: - Maintain office inventory and order new supplies - Process check requests and mail checks to vendors - Answer, screen and forward incoming telephone calls - Renew subscriptions and memberships for Center - Pick up, screen, sort, distribute and respond to incoming mail - Assist with the purchasing, maintenance, and set up of office equipment - Filing, faxing, duplicating and other tasks as needed Requirements: High-Quality Communication Skills: Candidate must have excellent verbal and written skills, as well as strong library skills. Position includes a high level of proof reading, editing, and advanced formatting in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Candidate should be able to suggest revisions and make basic editorial and formatting changes to reports and papers. A computer-based formatting/proof reading/editing assignment will be part of the interview process. Highly Computer Literate: Candidate MUST have extensive knowledge of Windows, Microsoft Office, Internet and E-mail, and be comfortable learning new programs through on-line help services and written manuals. Applicant must be able to troubleshoot computer hardware and software problems with assistance from the TC Computing Center. Applicants MUST have advanced Microsoft Word and Excel skills, and at least an intermediate skill level in Access, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Excellent Organizational Skills: Candidate must be reliable, responsible, detail oriented, highly organized, and willing to take initiative. Applicant must be able to work on several projects for/with different people simultaneously, prioritize, and anticipate and meet deadlines. Necessary Experience and Qualifications: Prior office/administrative experience is necessary. A bachelors degree is required. Graduate students are preferred. Travel to 1-2 conferences per year may be required. Participation at staff meetings and seminars is also required.
