Community College Involvement in Adult Education

In the summer of 2003, CCRC undertook a national survey of community college involvement in adult education for the Center for the Advancement of Adult Literacy (CAAL).

The report of this project, The Role of Community Colleges in State Adult Education Systems: A National Analysis, is the third resource document to be issued by CAAL in its study of community colleges and adult education/literacy. Vanessa Smith Morest, Assistant Director of Postsecondary Research of the Community College Research Center at Teachers College, Columbia University, conducted the research with assistance from Kerry Charron, Annika Fasnacht, and Daniella Olibrice. The report is based on information drawn from several sources, including interviews with officials in 35 states across the country, and an analysis of state and national adult education data. The report looks at the structure of adult education in the United States with a focus on the role of community colleges. Findings show that community colleges are major providers of adult education, serving as many as a third of all adult education students.
